PORTO, PORTUGAL WEDNESDAY SEPT. 5 TO SATURDAY SEPT. 8, 2007 Dear Colleagues: Since time immemorial, Europe has prided itself on its artists, philosophers, scholars, explorers and scientists. From Hippocrates to Galen and Odysseus to Prince Henry the Navigator and Vasco da Gama, sciences as far apart as astronomy and medicine had their origins on this continent. It is therefore fitting that international experts in the field of bariatric surgery will meet in Europe to discuss the epidemic of morbid obesity and explore the medical solutions. It is my honour and pleasure to invite you to the 12th World Congress of IFSO in Porto. At the Annual International Congress, world-renowned experts will present their experience in morbidly obese patient management techniques, patient selection criteria, established and modern laparoscopic procedures and the refinement of the better-known anti-obesity operations. It is also an important forum for discussion and debate, encouraging experts and the audience to interact. One of the greatest challenges that our discipline faces today is consistently updating our knowledge on the recent developments, to provide the highest level of care and the best possible quality of life for our patients. Many issues will be addressed, including surgical training and experience, requirements for setting up safe and effective bariatric surgery facilities, and the preparation of common practice guidelines. In Europe, obesity currently afflicts 150,000,000 people, is enormously expensive, and, most important, proves fatal for over 1,000,000 individuals annually. Bariatric surgery is currently designated as the only available treatment for morbidly obese patients by the World Health Organization. There is an encouraging increase in the number of surgeons who have a major role to play in treating the victims of this extremely serious and life-threatening ailment. Portugal, a spectacular country with modern facilities and traditional Mediterranean hospitality, offers a myriad of opportunities to those wishing to combine science and education with the excitement of exploring this beautiful country. We look forward to welcoming you to Porto! Professor John Melissas President of IFSO Dear Colleagues: It is a great privilege and honor to welcome you to the “12th World Congress of IFSO” in Porto, a World Heritage City. The event will be held at the Old Custom House, inside the historical center of the city, facing the northern bank of the river Douro. You will be able to attend pre-meeting courses and symposia, including Allied Health, and lectures, papers and videos selected for plenary sessions. This will offer you a wonderful opportunity to renew knowledge and debate on recent and traditional methods. Posters will be permanently exhibited throughout the Congress, to be discussed individually. In September in Portugal, the weather is typically very pleasant, and ideally suited for travelling. As a result of these factors, I am convinced that all attendees will enjoy an unforgettable stay. Social activities are planned to allow old and new friends to chat in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy the meeting! António Sérgio President of the Congress
