ASMS NEWS
CONFERENCE NEWS The 38th ASMS Conference was held June 3-8, 1990, in Tucson, Arizona. The record-breaking tempe ratures that have plagued the Southwest throughout the summer introduced many conference attendees to "dry heat." Our intrepid members were, however, undaunted and enjoyed themselves in the relaxed setting offered by La Paloma and the Ventana Canyon Resorts. The conference featured a diversity of plenary speakers and oral session topics, as well as the poster sessions and workshops. Robert Murphy, Vice-President for Programs, designed a format of morning oral sessions and afternoon posters and worksh op s to accommodate the necessity of utilizing two separate facilities . It gave the workshops greater prominence in the program and eliminated the usual da sh ing back and forth between posters and talks. The downside, of course, was reduction in the amount of time available for talks.
AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED CONTRIBUTION TO MASS SPECTROMETRY Presentation of the first ASMS Award for Distinguished Contribution to Mass Spectrometry was a highlight of the Conference. The award was presented to Ronald D. Macfarlane, Professor at Texas A&M University, for his work in the conception, development, and application of Califomium-252 plasma desorption mass spectrometry. Ronald Hites, President of ASMS, presented Professor Macfarlane with a plaque and a cash award of $2,000. Following the presentation, Professor Macfarlane made a moving and interesting talk, highlighting his research with personal anecdotes (Figure 1).

ASMS RESEARCH AWARDS There are two ASMS Research Awards presented each year. The award sponsored by VG Instruments was presented to Jennifer Brodbelt-Lustig of the University of Texas to fund her investigation of Ion/Molecule Complexes and Internal Ion/Molecule Reactions Using Photodissociation. PROCEEDINGS The Proceedings of the 38th Conference includes the manuscript of Professor Macfarlane's talk, plus extended abstracts and workshop reports. Richard Caprioli, Editor, reports that over 90% of the talks and posters presented at the Conference, as well as a directory of ASMS members, appear in the Proceedings. The Proceedings is sent' to ASMS members and Conference attendees each September.
ELECTION RESULTS · Veronica Bierbaum, ASMS Secretary, has announced the election of four individuals to the ASMS Board of Directors . Henry M. Fales of N.I.H. is the Vice President for Programs and President-Elect; P. Jane Gale of the David Sarnoff Research Center is Secretary; and two new Members-at-Large are Michael T. Bowers of the University of California in Santa Barbara and Robert J. Cotter of Johns Hopkins University. Retiring from the ASMS Board are Michelle V. Buchanan, Michael S. Story, Rodger L. Foltz , and Gerry G . Meisel s . Michelle Buchanan is at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and served ASMS as Treasurer and co-chair of the 1990 Sanibel Conference. Mike Story of Finnigan Corporation chaired the Education Committee, which oversees ASMS short courses and created the booklet, "What is Mass Spectrometry?" Rodger Foltz of the University of Utah organized the ASMS Short Course on GC /MS in Drug Testing and chaired the Committee on Measurements and Standards. Gerry Mei sels, who is currently Provost of the University of South Florida, ended his six-year term on the Board as Vice President for Programs, President, and Past President. His skill as a negotiator and his interest in the broad concerns of the scientific community, particularly relative to education, have enhanced the prominence of ASMS and facilitated many services and activities of the Society. At the ASMS Conference, Ronald A. Hites was honored for his accomplishments as President (Figure 2). Within his term, ASMS added the annual Sanibel Conference to its roster of meetings, published the
booklet "What is Mass Spectrometry?", created the Annual Award for Distinguished Contribution to Mass Spectrometry, and expanded the ASMS Research Awards program. In addition, Ron was singly responsible for the creation of this Journal of the American
Society for Mass Spectrometry.
