Urinary Tract Pathology: an Illustrated Practical Guide to Diagnosis
Bernstein J. and Chung J. Raven Press, New York. Reviewed by Steven E. Swift, MD, Clinical Instructor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of California, Irvine, Long Beach Memorial Women's Hospital This textbook was recently released by Raven Press, New York, and in the introduction it is stated that this is intended for the practicing pathologist although urologic radiologists and urologic surgeons may also find this book helpful in their practice. The text covers the entire urinary trast from the kidneys to the urethra along with all of the accessory structures. It is broken up into sections on: (1) developmental and congenital anomalies, (2) infectious and inflammatory processes, and (3) malignancies of the urinary tract. In the discussion on developmental and congenital anomalies there is a good description of embryologic development. There are also excellent photos of gross specimens and radiologic studies that go along with these anomalies. However, there is a paucity of developmental diagrams that would help the reader to better understand some of these anomalies and how they occur. Also, in this section there are
many photos of radiologic studies; however, some of these are difficult to interpret. Including more arrows and longer descriptions would make these much more discernable to the non-radiologist audience. The book also has a section on inflammatory and infectious disease processes that occur throughout the urinary tract. Again, most of the photos are devoted toward the gross and histologic views of the diseases covered in the text, and there are very few endoscopic views. The book then goes on to cover a wide variety of malignancies that can occur in the lower urinary tract with a good discussion on most of these. Overall, the book covers a wide variety of diseases in both the male and female with a nice discussion on clinical signs and symptoms as well as the histologic changes associated with these conditions. However, as its name suggests, this is a textbook devoted to diagnosis and there is very little, if any, information regarding therapy or treatment. For its intended audience, the urinary tract pathologist, we feel that this is a good text and would recommend it. However, for the practicing clinician, while this may be a helpful addition to their library, this cannot be recommended as a definitive treatise on the diagnosis and treatment or urinary tract pathology.
