C o m m e n t s From the Editors From the Managing Editors Robert M. Morgan, Managing Editor David F. Salisbury, Associate Managing Editor In 1982 the Learning Systems Institute at Florida State University joined with AECT in publishing the Journal of Instructional Development. The Learning Systems Institute has appreciated the opportunity to support JID and the field of instructional development in this way. Beginning with Volume 11, the association will take over publication of JID. Beginning with Volume 12, JID and ECTJ will be pubfished under one cover with a new name. Again, we express our appreciation to the readership and contributors to JID and our support to the future of the journal.
From the Editor
Norman Higgins, Editor The publication of the Journal of Instructional Development, Volume, 10, Number 4 by the Learning Systems Institute at Florida State University
marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. When Dr. Robert Morgan agreed to serve as the managing editor of the journal and to publish it at Florida State he literally saved the journal from extinction and set the tone for its continued growth as a scholarly professional publication. Those of us who recognize the value of scholarship in our professions are deeply indebted to Dr. Morgan for his commitment to the Journal of Instructional Development and for his faith in the editorial staff. The Division of Instructional Development recently recognized Dr. Morgan's contributions to the instructional development field with its annual award for outstanding service. Dr. Morgan's contributions extend far beyond the interests of a single division of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology. His contributions affect all of the professions represented in the many divisions of the Association. It is hoped that the journal will continue to grow in value to the broader AECT membership without diluting the quality contents.
Volume 11 of the Journal of Instructional Development will be published by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology in preparation for the co-publication of ECTJ and JID under the title Educational Technology: Researchand Development. This change in publication reflects the improved financial health of the Association. It also reflects the desire on the part of the AECT leaders to consolidate two scholarly publications and make them available to the membership at lower cost. It is most fitting that Volume 10, Number 4 is a special issue that deals with the role of instructional development in public education. This special issue embodies many of the concerns that Dr. Morgan has expressed about how to improve the influence of the instructional development community in public education. It also addresses themes that are particularly relevant to the larger membership of the Association, many of whom work in or with the public schools.
