Center for Composite Materials! University of Delaware The Center for Composite Materials is an interdisciplinary research center in the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware. It was fOlUlded in 1974 as a center of excellence dedicated to the evolution of the science and technology necessary to advance the state of the art of polymeric, metallic and ceramic composite materials.
Objectives The primary academic mission of the Center is to promote interdisciplinary research and educational programs in the University that are directed to the needs of the industrial and federal commlUlities. Through selection and funding of research in the numerous academic programs of
the University and through development of unique research facilities, the Center serves to bring together facuity, research professionals and students in an interdisciplinary environment. The Center has three broad program objectives: to conduct basic research in composite materials, to provide avenues for technology transfer between university, government and industrial research groups, and to train students for work in the composites field. A major cooperative university-industry research program, 'Application of Composite Materials to Industrial Products,' is conducted by the Center for Composite Materials and sponsored by a consortium of 27 industrial firms interested in one or more of the prin-
cipal segments of the composites industry: materials producers, parts suppliers and end-user industries.
Personnel Comprising the Center's personnel are 20 faculty members appointed from the College of Engineering departments and programs of Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Aerospace, and Mechanics and Metallurgy; 7 research professional engineers; 30 graduate students; and 20 undergraduate laboratory technicians. The University of Delaware's Center for Composite Materials is said to be the largest academic research group in the United States to focus exclusively on composite science and technology.
