r. Leslie S. Ettre Winner of the 1985 American hemical Society Award in Chromatography le American Chemical Society announced on August 27, ~84 during its 188th National Meeting in Philadelphia PA, te winners of its 1985 National Awards. Among them is r. L. S. Ettre, senior staff scientist at The Perkin-Elmer )rporation and an editor of our journal who is the winner the 1985 American Chemical Society Award in Chromagraphy. The Award will be presented at the Society's ~gth National Meeting next April in Miami Beach. Dr. .tre is being honored for his many important contributions the advancement of chromatography over a quarter Itury from which his contributions to the field of capilgas chromatography are best known. m in Hungary in 1922, Dr. Ettre received degrees in ;mical engineering and a doctorate in analytical chem, from the Technical University of Budapest. He. worked Hungary and Germany until joining the Perkin-Elmer ffin 1958 as an applications engineer. Between 1968 and 72 he has been the editor of the Snell-Ettre Encyclo]ia of Industrial Chemical Analysis, a 20-volume series blished by John Wiley & Sons. In 1972 he returned to ~kin-Elmer, as a senior staff scientist, his present position. 1977-1978 Dr. Ettre was a research fellow at Yale ~iversity and in 1978-1979 an adjunct professor at the dversity of Houston. ~thor and coauthor of close to 200 papers, Dr. Ettre is o the author and editor of numerous books from which me have been translated into Russian, German, French id Spanish. He has chaired numerous symposia and :tured widely in the whole world. Among numerous ,ors and awards accorded him are the M. S. Tswett ~romatography Award (1978), the Chromatography ~rnorial Medal of the U. S. S. R. Academy of Sciences 1979), the L. S. Palmer Award of the Minnesota Chromagraphy Forum (1980), and the A. J. P. Martin Award of e Chromatography Society (the former British ChromaFaphy Discussion Group) (1982). He also won a number 'awards for his hobby of philately. komatographia Vol. 18, No. 10, October 1984

International Conference Topics in Flavour Research On the occasion of Prof. Dr. F. Drawert's 60th birthday, the Technical University Munich, Freising-Weihenstephan, organizes an international conference on Topics in Flavour Research to be held on April 1--2, 1985. The scientific program will comprise invited lectures and contributed papers dealing with the state of the art of flavour research. Topics such as the following will be covered: analytical techniques, biogenesis, chemical formation, biotechnology, and physiology. Nearly half of the time will be devoted for young scientists, e.g. at the end or just after their Ph.D. work, to present actual results in
588
flavour research. Therefore, contributed papers (15 min) will beex clusively reserved for this aim. Please follow this call for papersanc submit the title and an abstract in English. Deadline: January1 1985. For information and registration please contact the organizing c0m mittee, Technische Universit~t M(Jnchen, Institut f(Jr Lebensrnitte technologie und Analytische Chemie, D43050 Freising-Weiher stephan, FRG (Tel.: 0861/7 1283).
SAC 86/3rd BNASS in Bristol July 2 0 t h - 2 6 t h , 1986 The Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry h~ chosen Bristol as the site for the SAC 86 International Conferen~ on Analytical Chemistry. On this occasion the SAC Conferencei~ to be combined with the Biennial National Atomic Spectrosc0py Symposium (BNASS -- organised by the Atomic Spectroscopy Group of RSC/AD and the Spectroscopy Group of the Instituteof Physics). SAC International Conferences are organised trienniallf and still bear the initials of the then Society for Analytical Chemistry which was responsible for the initiation of these Conferenc~ BNASS is the third in this jointly organised series which is organi~ on a two-yearly cycle. The 3rd BNASS will be formally opened0n Wednesday, July 23rd, and will continue on July 24th and 25th.
Scientific Programme The scientific programme will be organised around plenary, invited and contributed papers and posters covering the whole field of analytical chemistry, and all aspects of atomic spectroscopy. As at previous Conferences, special symposia on particular analytical themes will be organised by RSC Groups and other associated bodies. The programme will include Workshops, where research workers can demonstrate new apparatus and techniques. Update Courses are also planned, to provide all-day tutorial and practical demonstration sessions. The latter will be held on the Wednesday, as an alternative to a scientific or cultural visit, or to 3rd BNASS Programme.
