PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 459 - 14 Aug 2004 Guideline for managing paediatric otitis media with effusion released A new clinical practice guideline for the management of otitis media with effusion among infants and children has been prepared by a select subcommittee of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The guideline updates that developed in 1994 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and offers recommendations to healthcare providers for identifying, monitoring, and managing otitis media with effusion among individuals aged 2 months–12 years. Appropriate diagnosis is emphasised in the guideline, and various options for management are outlined, including observation, medical intervention, and referral for surgical intervention. The guideline is applicable to any setting in which infants and children with otitis media with effusion would be identified, monitored, or managed, say the authors.
