The IAG Newsletter is under the editorial responsibility of the IAG Central Bureau. It is an open forum and contributors are welcome to send material (preferably in electronic form) to the IAG Central Bureau. These contributions should complement information sent by IAG ocials or by IAG symposia organizers (reports and announcements). Each IAG Newsletter includes several of the following topics: · · · ·
general information reports of IAG symposia reports by national correspondents reports by commissions, special commissions or study groups · symposia announcements · book reviews · fast bibliography General Information New IAG Representative to ISO The IAG has appointed Dr. J. Ihde (e-mail:
[email protected]) as new representative to The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO/ TC 211 (Geographic Information/Geomatics). Dr. J. Ihde is already active in the TC as a national representative. He is replacing Dr. C.Boucher. A written status report on ongoing activities in the ISO/TC 211 by Dr. Ihde can be found at the following Internet address: www.gfy.ku.dk/iag/isotcstatus.htm International Standards Organisation (ISO) TC211 (Geographic Information/Geomatics) plenary meeting will be held on 27±30 September, in Kyoto, Japan Books for review are the responsibility of: Prof. Martin Vermeer Finnish Geodetic Institute Geodeetinrinne 2, (PL 15) SF-02431 Masala Finland e-mail: Martin.Vermeer@fgi.®

IAG Special Working Group for the Arctic Gravity Project Chairman: R. Forsberg (Denmark) Co-chairman: S. Kenyon (USA) Objective The Special Working Group of the Arctic Gravity Project is a time-limited, dedicated eort to make a public-domain gravity grid model of the Arctic gravity ®eld north of 64 N. There is currently a great need to compile a uniform gravity grid of the Arctic region, for use in both geophysics/geology and geodesy/orbit determination. Recent advances in data collection technology, notably the advent of airborne gravimetry, the development of satellite altimetry over ice-covered regions, and availability of gravity data from scienti®c cruises with nuclear
106
submarines, have meant that a large part of the Arctic is already covered by substantial, accessible gravity ®eld information. This may provide a detailed insight into the tectonics of the region, allowing an accurate geoid model to be established for the ®rst time. Recent presentations make it clear that monumental eorts have been made by Russia in mapping the gravity ®eld of the entire Arctic Ocean, which shows that the formation of the WG is timely. The establishment of a freely available uniform gravity grid of the Arctic follows ongoing activities to develop an Arctic bathymetric map and database under the auspices of the IHO. Program of activities It is proposed to make a 5' gravity grid available based on as much releasable gravity ®eld data as possible, within a two-year time frame. Representatives of all Arctic nations have joined the study group, along with other major research groups active in collecting gravity data for the region. Special studies will be undertaken on how to utilize bathymetry and ice thickness data for gravity grid compilation. The National Imagery and Mapping Agency, St. Louis,
USA, will serve as the computing center for the SWG's activities in validation, calibration and ®nal grid production of the gravity data obtained from the various sources. International Workshops will be held during the course of the project, to support the team eort. The ®nal gravity grids will be available on CD-ROM as well as through BGI and other data centers. List of members Georges Balmino (France), John Brozena (USA), Bernard J Coakley (USA), Gleb Demianov (Russia), Lars Ake Haller (Sweden), D. Bryne Hearty (Canada), Jussi Kaariainen (Finland), Seymour Laxon (UK), Uwe F.
