High r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r density of the m e t a l a r e specified for g a t e v a l v e s produced f r o m 10Kh18N9TL s t e e l and designed f o r operation in c o r r o s i v e media. After casting, the g a t e - v a l v e casing (ends for welding) a r e tested f o r defects with x r a y and f l u o r e s c e n t p e n e t r a n t s (transition a r e a s ) . P r e v i o u s l y at Aleksin Heavy Industrial Fitting Plant g a t e - v a l v e casings with nominal p a s s a g e d i a m e t e r s of 250-800 r a m (Fig. la) w e r e c a s t with f a l s e flanges on the ends of the main openings on which w e r e placed r i s e r s . A f t e r casting of the housings the flanges w e r e cut off. However, x - r a y inspection showed that t h e r e a r e many defects in such castings. To eliminate d e f e c t s , the housing casting production operation was changed (Fig. lb). The castings w e r e designed to e n s u r e that the principle of s u c c e s s i v e solidification was o b s e r v e d . This principle holds that an i n c r e a s e in the r a t e s of s u c c e s s i v e l a t e r a l hardening along the casting o c c u r s so that the points located on t h e a x i a l line of the casting n e a r the ends f o r welding harden e a r l i e r than the points located close to the feeding head above the packing r i n g s ; in other w o r d s , a t a p e r e d feed channel of liquid m e t a l , tending to m o v e in the direction toward the head, is f o r m e d . It should be noted that at the s a m e t i m e l a t e r a l hardening develops at points located close to the head. T h e r e f o r e , d e n s e casting depends upon whether the tip of the tapered channel r e a c h e s t h e s e points before s o l i dification is completed. In the l a t t e r c a s e d e l i v e r y of feed m e t a l stops and axial shrinkage porosity is f o r m e d . The introduction of this casting method for g a t e - v a l v e housings has made it possible to i m p r o v e their quality significantly (in x - r a y inspection the number of defects did not exceed the allowable}, to i n c r e a s e the output of acceptable p a r t s , and to d e c r e a s e a s - c a s t weight and machining of the housing. The annual savings f r o m the introduction of this method into production is 20,000 r u b l e s .

In the F a s t o v "Red October" Chemical Machine Building Plant a s e m i g a n t r y c r a n e with one cantilever with a c a r r y i n g capacity of 5 tons has been developed and manufactured. A short,flexible c r a n e support is t r a n s p o r t e d along an overhead t r a c k , whose railhead level is located at a height of 5.5 m. The rigid support is t r a n s p o r t e d along a ground t r a c k whose raflhead level coincides with the level of the platform. The c r a n e c a n t i l e v e r makes it possible for the telpher to be t r a n s p o r t e d on a highway. The c r a n e is s e r v i c e d by a depot platform placed along the walls of the shop. f r o m the ground.
The crane is controlled
The advantage of the s e m i g a n t r y c r a n e , as compared to a g a n t r y c r a n e , is that since it has no ground supports next to the building where the exits on the depot platform a r e , it can be used without hindrance and the entire s u r f a c e in the a r e a below the c r a n e can be used efficiently. Besides, the c r a n e is simple to manuf a c t u r e : The bridge is built f r o m pipes of a d i a m e t e r 426 x 8 m m , H - b e a m s , and s t r i p s ; and the supports a r e built of channels and plates.
