The Society The International Society for Reef Studies (ISRS) was founded in 1980. As stated in its constitution, the principal objective of the Society is to promote for the benefit of the public, the production and dissemination of scientific knowledge and understanding of coral reefs, both living and fossil. To achieve its objectives the Society holds annual meetings and co-sponsors other gatherings, prints and distributes the journal Coral Reefs and the newsletter Reef Encounter, and raises funds and receives contributions by way of subscriptions and donations. Much of the information contained here can also be found on the Society’s web page: http:// www.uncwil.edu/isrs/.

Contributed papers concentrate on quantitative and theoretical reef studies, including experimental, field and laboratory work and modelling, as well as the application of scientific principles and results to management and conservation. The journal is becoming increasing popular as reflected in the number and quality of recent submissions. The Society gives an award for the best paper published in each volume.
Reef Encounter: The Society Newsletter Since 1983, Reef Encounter, published twice per year, has disseminated news, views, and short articles of general interest to reef investigators, resource manager, and policy-makers. Fellowships and Awards The Society offers two Fellowship opportunities. The ISRS/CMC Coral Reef Fellowship is administered jointly with the Ocean Conservancy and is awarded on an annual basis. The Fellowship is for research that emphasizes an ecosystem approach to understand processes that shape the way coral reefs look and function, especially related to changes caused in response to management or disturbance (human-caused or natural). A Student Travel Fellowship is also available annually for students to present papers at international or regionally important meetings. Information about Fellowships is available on the Society’s web page. The Charles Darwin Medal is presented every four years to a member of the Society in recognition of a record of sustained, highly significant contributions to coral reef studies. Previous medalists are David R. Stoddart (1988), Peter W. Glynn (1992), Ian G. Macintyre (1996), and Yossi Loya (2000).
