International Society for Rock Mechanics N e w s of t h e S o c i e t y The Board of the Society will meet in Denver on the 31st August next. The Council will also meet in Denver on the 1st and 7th September a new Board being then elected. These meetings will be held in connection with the 3rd International Congress of the ISRM to take place from the 1st to the 7th September 1974. Commissions
of t h e S o c i e t y
The eight Commission of the Society will meet in Denver on the 1st September, some of them completing thein their assigned task. At the Katowice Council meeting the establishment of a Commission on "Publication and Translation" was approved Dr. H. K. K u t t e r being committed the charge of its Chairmanship. The objectives of this Commission will be to consider: how to reduce or limit the number of papers that are being published in the Transactions of ISRM Symposia or Congresses; how to reduce or limit the translation services now being required at ISRM Symposia (and possibly at Congresses); other related problems, including review of the ISRM Bylaws governing the "Functions and Operation of the Editorial Board of the Journal 'Rock Mechanics'". Up to this moment the following persons accepted the appointment for this new Commission: H. K. K u t t e r - C h a i r m a n ; T, C. A t c h i s o n (U.S.A.); G. G u i d i c i n i (Brazil); G. H e r g e t (Canada); R. O l i v e i r a (Portugal). The work of this Commission will be mostly by correspondence. The first meeting will take place in Denver at the opportunity of the 3rd International Congress of the Society. N e w s in t h e F i e l d of R o c k M e c h a n i c s World Open University, a non-profit, non-resident Graduate School, has recently opened its Geotechnical Engineering program, both for continuing education and for advanced degrees. 7th--8th November, 1974, Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) - - 27th Canadian Geotechnical Conference. Papers are invited for the 27th Canadian Geotechnical Conference. While papers will be accepted on any geotechnical subject, special priority will be given to submissions suitable for the following sessions: (1) Geotechnical Engineering and Northern Development; (2) Geotechnicat Engineering in the Mining Industry; (3) Geotechnical Engineering and Environmental Analysis. Papers will be accepted on the basis of an abstract submitted by April 1, 1974. Authors will be informed of acceptance and of a date for their completed submission in order for papers to be preprinted before the conference.
