MEDIA REVIEW A CULTURE OF EMOTIONS: A CULTURAL COMPETENCE AND DIVERSITY TRAINING PROGRAM, by Harriet Koskoff, Fanlight Productions Media Library, 22-D Hollywood Avenue, Hohokus, NJ 07423, 2002, $99.00 and $9.00 S&H ($108.00). The Culture of Emotions, a 60 minute video produced by Harriet Koskoff, with scientific advisors Francis Lu, M.D. and Juan Mezzich, M.D., is an excellent introduction for professionals wishing to learn cultural competence and diversity skills in academic, medical, and psychiatric settings. Although the tape is well grounded by establishing a strong theoretical foundation in each of its sections, it is clinically very practical for professionals working with a broad spectrum of patients in culturally diverse settings. This very well produced tape features didactic interviews and skill building exercises with distinguished researchers and clinicians who are experienced in both theoretical and practical areas of cultural psychiatry. The focus of the tape is on building the skills necessary to use DSM IV in a culturally competent way in evaluation and treatment. The Outline for Cultural Formulation is the core teaching focus of the tape, providing a conceptual bridge between Euro-western diagnostic concepts, categories, and etiological explanations of illness, and traditional views of health, disease and pathology in diverse cultural groups from around the world. This fine videotape is definitely recommended for a broad audience of professionals and students in psychiatry, other medical sciences, and the social sciences.
