■ Onset of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) at a younger age appears to be linked with antidepressant use, according to the results of a Mayo Clinic study, says the clinic. "Our findings suggest that RBD in younger patients - in the 30s instead of the usual age of the 50s or older - is frequently linked to antidepressant use", says Dr R. Robert Auger, from the clinic. Researchers reviewed records of patients consecutively diagnosed with RBD between 2002 and 2005, and excluded those with neurodegenerative diseases; 20 patients diagnosed at < 50 years old were matched to patients without RBD. Equivalent comparisons were made in patients diagnosed with RBD at > 50 years old. Younger RBD patients showed greater antidepressant use than those without RBD (80% vs 15% use). Mayo Clinic.
