Resident’s Case Presentation Awards: Introduction ANTONIO R. PEREZ-ATAYDE Department of Pathology, Children’s Hospital, Boston, MA, USA,
The Society for Pediatric Pathology (SPP) has sponsored for the 2nd year the Resident’s Case Presentation Awards (RCPA), a program to promote the career development of pathology residents who are interested in pediatric pathology. To be eligible, each applicant had to be in an accredited North American pathology residency program. The application consisted of a single page case report related to the theme “Unique Aspects of Pediatric Pathology.” Aside from the length, the format of the case report was left to the discretion of the author. However, it had to describe an anatomic or clinical pathology case and indicate how some aspects of it highlighted a difference between pediatric pathology and other specialties. Each award included travel expenses to attend the 2003 Interim Meeting of the SPP, presen-
tation of their work at the meeting, lunch with three “legendary” figures in the field of pediatric pathology, a 1-year subscription to Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, and publication of their case report in the journal. This year, more than 30 applications were received and a three-member ad hoc committee selected three winners. The 2003 RCPA recipients are Kudakwashe Chikwava (University of Pittsburgh), Kelly Nigro (University Hospitals of Cleveland), and Mana Parast (Emory University School of Medicine). Presentations of their work during the Interim Meeting in Cincinnati were outstanding. All three individuals were enthusiastic about their work and had a genuine interest in pursuing a career in pediatric pathology. Their award-winning case reports are published in this issue of the journal.
