W i t h the exception of the articles by PETER HIGGINS, MARIA SZENDREI, and P. C. TROTTER AND M. V. VOLKOV, the papers in this issue are based on contributions delivered at the CONFERENCE ON SEMIGROUP TttEORY AND ITS APPLICATIONS held at Tulane University from March 28 to March 30, 1994 in honor of A. H. CLIFFORD. His life and work have been described by DONALD D. MILLER 1 a n d GORDON B. PRESTON 2 in Volume 7 of Semigroup Forum. T h a t volume was dedicated in its entirety to A. H. CLIFFORD and A. D. \VALLACE and their contributions to tile theory of semigroups. The bibliography representing A. H. CLIFFORD's complete published work which is presented on the following pages includes the bibliography published in 19733 but is complemented by the works published since the appearance of that volume. More recent notes bearing on A. H. CLIFFORD's life and work may be found in a Volume of Proceedings of the Tulane Conference of 1994 edited by KARL H. HOFMANN and ~ [ I C H A E L W . M I S L O V E 4 . T h a t volume is comprised mainly of papers written by the invited speakers at the Tulane conference.
