Abstract. The results of the very-low frequency sky survey of discrete sources made with the UTR2 radio telescope within the declination zone 41 ° to 52 ° are presented. The UTR-2 radio source catalogue contains the estimates of the coordinates and flux densities of 432 sources measured at a number of the lowest frequencies used in contemporary radio astronomy within the range from 10 at 25 MHz. The questions of establishing the UTR-2 sky survey sensitivity, completeness and reliability of the resulting catalogue are considered. The coordinates of the sources measured at very low frequencies have been compared with respective data obtained in the 4C survey at 178 MHz.
1. Introduction This paper continues a seiles of publications dedicated to the systematic sky survey that has been carried out with the UTR-2 radio telescope at a number of the lowest frequencies used in contemporary radio astronomy within the range from 10 to 25 MHz. The results of the UTR-2 survey obtained earlier for the celestial sphere sections within the declination ranges - 13 ° to +20 ° and 52 ° to 60 ° are presented in the papers by Braude et al. (1978a, 1979, 1981, 1985). The experimental techniques, methods of observations and data processing, as well as basic parameters of the UTR-2 are described in the papers by Braude et al. (1978b) and Sokolov (1985). The UTR-2 radio survey results presented in this paper were obtained during the period from 1985 to 1990 for the celestial sphere section within the declination zone 41 ° to 52 °. Thus by now the UTR-2 sky survey covers two nonadjacent sections of the celestial sphere; i.e. the small (f2 = 0.86 sr) near-zenith one within declination range 41 ° to 60 ° where maximum sensitivity of the survey was provided and that of the celestial sphere in the interval ofdeclinations from - 13 ° to +20 ° characterized by considerable lower sensitivity, but covering a large solid angle (f2 = 3.22 sr), that allowed us to get sufficient statistics for strong radio sources (Sokolov, 1986). The aim of this paper is to present the new experimental data on radio source low-frequency radiation and to determine parameters of the survey needed for further statistical and astrophysical analysis of the data obtained. 2. The UTR-2 Survey Sensitivity in the Declination Zone 41 ° to 52 ° The estimates of coordinates and flux densities of discrete radio sources presented in this paper have been obtained in a course of observations which were carried out using the following fixed positions of the middle beam of the UTR-2 five-beam reception pattern along declination axis 61 = 42.9 °, 62 = 43.3 °, 63 = 45.7 °, B4 : 46.80 ° 65 = 48.32 °, 66 : 49.85 ° and 67 : 51.38 °. As a result, the sky section between the 6min = 41.4 ° and 6max = 52.1 ° has been covered by the survey. The overlapping of the celestial sphere along the right ascension axis in the UTR-2 radio survey mode is provided by the Earth rotation and inclinations of the reception pattern along East-West direction. Thus, for each declination fixed position of the reception pattern the observations were carried out using the hourangle settings At = + 1 h and At = + 2 h. Such a procedure allows us, first, during the period from October to April to overlap a maximum interval of the sky along right ascension and, secondly, to improve the reliability of the obtained estimates of the source coordinates and flux densities since the same sections of the celestial sphere are observed at two or more different distributions of the reception pattem side lobes. Since the latest observations wem made using the near-zenith UTR-2 reception pattern positions a maximum survey sensitivity should be provided for the sky region covered, similarly to that obtained earlier for the sky section within the declination zone 52 ° to 60 ° (Braude et al., 1985). Let us estimate the minimum flux density values S m i n of point sources which can be reached in the UTR-2 sky survey within the declination interval in question. As is known, in the absence of interference of artificial origin the values of S m i n are determined by amplitude fluctuations on radio receiver output due to thermal noise and confusion. Because of statistic independence of these fluctuations the resulting variance a r2 of the amplitude fluctuations at the telescope output can be presented as 2 O"r :
2 2 O-c + O ' n ~
(1)
where a 2 is the variance of fluctuations due to the confusion effect, az is the variance of random thermal noise. Let us estimate the values o-c and crn for the UTR-2 radio telescope for the sky region considered. It can be shown that for the UTR-2 in the phase-switching operation mode the final equation for an is as follows: k{~Tb + To[(l - ~) + ( F - 1)]} an =

of the UTR-2, respectively, T = 60 S is the time constant of the output RC-filter, and A F is the receiver bandwidth. The magnitudes of Tb,, at the UTR-2 frequencies for the sky region in question can be obtained by reducing the background brightness temperatures at l0 MHz given in the paper by Caswell (1976). Thus, according to this paper the mean value of Tblo for the sky regions within the declination zone considered and outside of the galactic plane is (Tblo) ,~ 180 × 103 K. where 7110 and Tv are the values of extragalactic component of the background radiation at l0 M H z and at the UTR-2 frequencies, respectively; o~ = 2.4 is the spectral index of the galactic background radiation component (Bridle, 1967). The calculated values of crn at the UTR-2 operating frequencies as well as the values of the telescope parameters used for the reception pattern orientations characterized by the declination 6 - 46.8 ° and the hour-angle settings A t = -1-2h and A t -- -t-1 h are given in Table I. As it has been expected, the values of an for the near-zenith reception pattern positions do not depend in practice on the actual values of the hour angles for IAtl < 2 h. of amplitude fluctuations at the radio telescope output. The special observational method that had been worked out for experimental estimation of confusion and noise at the UTR-2 outputs was described in detail in the papers by Sokolov (1985, 1988). Let us use this method for deriving the confusion level for the UTR-2 over the declination range 41 ° to 52 ° . With this aim, according to the developed method, several special observations in the survey mode were carried out for the set of declinations within the interval 43 ° < ~ < 47 ° at At = - 2 h differing each from other by A6 ~ 1% The observations were conducted using the one-beam UTR-2 operation regime when all 30 receiving channels of the telescope were connected to the middle beam of its five-beam reception pattern. The following tune-frequencies of the 30-channel receiving system were used for these observations: ~'i = ~o + (i - 15)A~
(4)
where i = 1 , 2 , . . . , 30 is the channel number, u0 = 25 MHz and A u = 20 kHz are the frequency of observation and the frequency difference between two neighbouring channels, respectively. The value A u exceeds the bandwidth of the receiving channels at 25 MHz. On the other hand, the maximum frequency difference between the channels is A/Tmax -~- 580 kHz, i.e. lower than the bandwidth of the UTR-2 preamplifier at 25 MHz. As a result, 30 output original records with non correlated noise fluctuations on them and the same ionospheric distortions of the confusion relief were obtained simultaneously in the course of the observation for each fixed declination. Figure 1 shows the distribution of the thermal noise fluctuations obtained by averaging the records, which were obtained by differing the original records of independent pairs of the receiving channels. At the difference records the components of fluctuation conditioned by confusion effect in the channels were mutually canceled out as there were the same in different channels. The obtained distribution is characterized by an = 1,81 + 0.08 Jy which agrees satisfactorily with the previously calculated estimate. Figure 2 shows the distribution of the amplitudes D at independent points along the resulting record obtained by averaging about 25 simultaneous records of the same sky stripe with non correlated fluctuations of noise on them (about 5 channels were usually found to be subject to interference and excluded from analysis). Generally speaking, the distribution shown in Figure 2 is a convolution of the following form (Wall and Cook, 1975): oo
PN(D) = f P~(x)N(x - D)dx,
(5)
where Pc(D) is the distribution of fluctuations due to confusion only and N(D) is the noise distribution law. However, as the noise level ((r~ ~ 1.8 Jy) on the resulting record obtained by averaging of M records with non correlated noise was

The obtained PN(D)-distfibution is charactefized by crc = 4.34-0.4 Jy. This value is in good agreement with the expefimental estimate of the UTR-2 confusion level obtained prviously for another near-zenith antenna pattern position (Sokolov, 1985). For other frequencies of the UTR-2 range as well as for other antenna pattern positions the calculated estimates of the confusion level can be determined using the following relation (Durdin and Terzian, 1972):

As the experimental value crc = (4.3 + 0.4) Jy is in a good agreement with that

expected from the calculated dependence ~rc = f(6, At, u) of confusion level on declination 6, hour angle At, and frequency (Sokolov, 1985, 1988), we may use the results of that dependence for evaluating the mean confusion levels for the declination zone in question. Table II contains the mean calculated estimates of r.m.s, deviations of amplitude fluctuations due to confusion at the UTR-2 outputs for the declination zone 41.4 ° to 52.1 °. It should be noted that, generally speaking, in any experimental method of determining confusion level there is always possibility that responses from powerful sources leading to overestimation of qc can get into the used records. Therefore, to estimate the actual value of crc one has to limit the experimental distribution

at a Dmax level. For our case we shall consider the values listed in Table II as charactedstics of the records obtained fax away from powerful sources. Table III shows the calculated values of the resulting r.m.s, deviation tr~ of the fluctuations caused by both noise and confusion at the UTR-2 outputs for the survey within the declination range considered. The obtained values of crr characterize the limiting flux densities of individual sources which can be detected in the UTR-2 survey.
3. The UTR-2 Radio Source Catalogue The map of the sky region covered by the survey within the de¢lination zone 41 o to 52 ° and the final up-to-date map of the UTR-2 Sky Survey are shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4 respectively, As can be seen from Figure 4, the UTR-2 survey has already covered more than 70% of the sky section planned for the observations. The total number of observations which were made for the latest sky section is about 700. As a result of processing the data accumulated the catalogue of radio sources (see Appendix) containing the experimental estimates of their coordinates and flux densities at 10.0. 12.6. 14.7, 16.7.20 and 25 MHz has been obtained. The catalogue contains the low-frequency parameters of 432 sources detected over the solid angle of Q = 0.58 sr. The UTR-2 catalogue is arranged as follows. The line beginnings with IAU name of the detected source contains the averaged values of it's coordinates reduced to epoch of J 2000 and the corresponding errors, the source flux-density S16.7 at the middle UTR-2 frequency 16.7 MHz as obtained from measured spectrum of the source at all UTR-2 frequencies and its error, the value of measured low-frequency spectral index with respect to which the estimate of 216.7 has been obtained, the parameter W characterizing the integral reliability of the obtained source estimates and the corresponding object name from higherfrequency radio survey provided the source has been identified. The next several lines (the maximum number is 6) contain the experimental estimates of the source coordinates and flux densities as well as their errors at each operating frequency of the UTR-2 in the order of their increasing; the total number (N) of successive observations according to which the estimates were obtained and the number of different hour-angle settings (NRA) of the reception pattern at which the source was observed. obtain a reliable estimates of a source flux density the catalogue contains only their upper limits which are not accompanied by errors. The approximated values of S16.7 as well as low-frequency spectral indices are presented only for those sources which have flux density estimates obtained at not less than three different UTR-2 frequencies. To indicate the integral reliability of the source parameters obtained we used the symbols A, B and C. These reliability estimates take into account the total number of measurements, coordinate scatter, number of frequencies and hour-angle settings at which the source parameters have been evaluated. The more reliable observation results have been marked with symbol A. The sources whose parameters can be used without an additional analysis are marked with B and sources whose parameters are to be used with care have been marked with C. Identifications of the detected radio sources with objects from other radio surveys were conducted using the 4C-survey data at 178 MHz (Gower, Scott and Wills, 1967), the data of the survey carried out in Clark Lake at 26.3 MHz (Viner, 1973) as well as the 6C-survey data at 151 MHz (Hales, Baldwin and Warner, 1990). As it can be seen from the catalogue, it was practically impossible to obtain parameter estimates for the most of sources at l0 MHz in the sky survey mode.

It can be explained by the fact that favourable conditions for observations at this frequency are rare, mainly occurring in the period from December to the end January. Nevertheless, for some individual sources the estimates of their parameters at 10 MHz could be obtained using the UTR-2 tracking operation mode. It should be noted that the catalogue of the UTR-2 finding survey as well as other radio surveys contain a great amount of the experimental data on low-frequency radiation of both the previously known objects and of radio sources which are observed best of all at the lowest frequencies. The latter are mainly the old extended sources with low surface brightness and steep spectra. As is known, the sources with diffuse extended structure and steep low-frequency spectra constitute now the least studied class of objects. The experimental data obtained in a course of the survey can be used for solving such fundamental astrophysical problems as determination of the general laws of the space distribution, intrinsic and cosmological evolutions of extragalactic radio sources, processes of their interaction with the intergalaxy medium, as well as search for the possible radio astronomical criteria of distances. On the other hand, the experimental data obtained can be used also for solving a number of applied problems connected with propagation of decameter radio waves,

determination of the ionospheric parameters and the influence on them of the solar activity effects and so on.
4. The UTR-2 Catalogue Completeness and Reliability As is known, experimental data obtained in a course of any survey which are supposed to be used for further studies of the observed objects properties, in particular, of their statistical characteristics should possess high quality. The quality of the radio-source catalogues are characterized by such parameters as their statistical completeness and reliability. There are total Ct (S), Rt (S) and incremental completeness and reliability, respectively. The definitions of these parameters were given in the papers by Dixon and Kraus (1968) and Fitch et al. (1969). It should be noted that for radio source catalogues obtained at frequencies below 178 MHz the estimates of reliability and completeness have not been obtained previously. It is conditioned by the fact that most of the data available at very low frequencies were not obtained in a course systematic sky surveys, but as a result of measurements of a number of individual radio sources known from higher frequency surveys. The questions of determining the completeness and reliability for the UTR-2 survey were considered in detail by Sokolov (1985). In particular, it has been shown on the basis of model simulations that for estimating the quality of the UTR-2 catalogue one can also use the widely spread in radio astronomy criterion Smi n ~> 50, where 0" is the resulting r.m.s, deviation of the fluctuations at the radio telescope output due to noise and confusion. Thus, it was shown that for sources from the UTR-2 survey with S > 50" the statistically unbiased estimates of the source flux densities as well as the values of completeness and reliability being more than 0.9 are provided. Using the data from Table III one can determine the values of Smi n ~, at each UTR-2 frequency. These values characterize the weakest sources which can be used for further statistical analysis. On the other hand, as has been shown by Sokolov (1985), it is convenient for statistical analysis to characterize the detected sources by the flux density S16.7 at middle frequency 16.7 MHz of the UTR-2 range. This value obtained by a power law approximation of the source flux densities measured at all frequencies of the telescope are given in the catalogue. According to analysis of the source detection parameters (Sokolov, 1985) an unbiased value of the sample mean flux density and sufficient statistical completeness Ct(S) > 0.8 of a sample of radio sources from the UTR-2 survey are provided u n d e r S16.7/0" > 3.5. Hence, for the sky section considered these parameters are provided under S16.7 ~> 32 Jy. The parameters of the sky areas from the survey which can be used for studying the statistics of extragalactic radio sources observed are given in Table IV. The statistics of radio sources from the UTR-2 sky survey observed earlier within the declination zones 52 ° to 60 ° and - 13 ° to 20 ° were discussed in the papers by Sokolov (1985, 1986). It should be noted that the total solid angle f~t --- 0.43 sr of the sky areas which can be used for statistical analysis in the declination zone in question is more

than twice larger than that for the another near-zenith sky zone available earlier. It should allows us to improve the statistics of the weakest sources which can be detected in the UTR-2 survey.
5. Comparison with Other Radio Surveys As it has been already noted the observations over the declination range considered as weil as for the celestial sphere section 52 ° to 60 ° (Braude et al., 1985) correspond to the near-zenith reception pattern positions of the telescope. Hence, one may expect that coordinates of the sources detected at this sky section should be also subjected to a minimum distortion effects of the ionosphere. For determining the maximum mean accuracy of the source coordinates from the UTR-2 survey which is needed for their further identification with objects from other radio surveys let us compare coordinates of the sources found in the UTR-2 and 4C surveys. The mutual identification of the objects from the UTR-2 and 4C-surveys have been made by using the 'nearest neighbour' method (Richter, 1975). Figure 5a shows the distribution of the angular distance for all the nearest sources from the UTR-2 and 4C-surveys. The shape of the N(R)-distribution allows us to suggest that sources with R > 0.9 ° are not mutually identified the same objects measured in different surveys, but there are accidentally nearest ones. As a numerical criterion for a mutual identification of each ith pair of the nearest radio sources the dimensionless parameter ri has been used (Ruiter, Willlis, and Arp, 1983)
