The International Supercomputing Conference started in 1986 as the “Supercomputer Seminar” organized by Prof. Hans Meuer, then director of the computer center and professor for computer science at the University of Mannheim (Germany). Since these early days the annual conference became a major international event in the HPC community. As the conference grew bigger, it moved from Mannheim over Heidelberg and Dresden to Hamburg. In 2009 we expect more than 1,500 participants who will attend the exhibition and the various scientific and technical sessions. Over the years we decided to strengthen the scientific part of the conference and present selected talks on relevant research results in the field of HPC. These scientific sessions started in 2007 and preceded the conference. Slides and accompanying papers were made available via the conference web site. For 2009 we changed this concept and give the scientific part of the conference a higher ranking and visibility. The scientific sessions now merge into the Scientific Day, which is an integral part of the conference. The Scientific Day is scheduled in the afternoon of the first day of the conference. The call for participation was issued in winter 2008 and invited researchers and developers to submit latest results of their work as full research papers to the program committee of the Scientific Day. We solicited contributions in the fields of applications, system architecture, and large-scale system H. Meuer Prometeus GmbH, Waibstadt-Daisbach, Germany T. Ludwig (u) · K. Kaiser · W. Hansmann · P. organization. Topics of general interest like performance analysis and energy efficiency were also appreciated. Altogether we received 54 submissions from authors from all over the world. In a peer-reviewing process with an international committee we selected the best 24 papers for publication in this journal and for presentation during the Scientific Day of the conference. We are happy to announce that many fascinating aspects of HPC will be discussed during the Scientific Day. The accepted publications will cover the following research and development areas: • Large scale applications including those on GPGPU and many-core architectures. • System architecture including high performance input/ output. • Performance modeling, analysis, and optimization. • Grid technology. We are confident that the ISC participants will find this selection appealing and that the presentations will generate inspiring discussions in the audience. As in the years before, three awards were granted to the best papers. Selection was made by an independent award committee. The two ISC’09 awards were assigned to the following papers: • P. Balaji, A. Chan, R. Thakur, W. Gropp, E. Lusk – Towards Message Passing for a Million Processes: Characterizing MPI on a Massive Scale Blue Gene/P. • V. Agarwal, D.A. Bader, L. Dan, L.-K. Liu, D. Pasetto, M. Perrone, F. Petrini – Faster FAST: Multicore Acceleration of Streaming Financial Data. pean student or young scientist. This year’s award is granted to: • J.C. Mouri˜no, A. G´omez, J.M. Taboada, L. Landesa, J.M. B´ertolo, F. Obelleiro, J.L. Rodr´ıguez – High Scalability Multipole Method. Solving Half Billion of Unknowns. The proceedings of the Scientific Day are published in this special issue of Springer’s Journal “Computer Science – Research and Development”. As guest editors acted Thomas Ludwig (University of Hamburg since May 2009), Karl Kaiser, Werner Hansmann and Peer Stelldinger (University of Hamburg). We would like to express our gratitude to all the colleagues who submitted papers to the ISC Scientific Day just as well as to the members of the scientific program committee for their contribution in reviewing these papers and compile an attractive program for the conference’s audience.
