Films Open Book. A television programme produced by Unesco and directed by Jehangir Bhownagary. A Unesco television production (16 ram; colour; length 2o minutes).
I n this visual age, which flashes a multitude of messages into men's minds, can the book survive? I t does, and not as an anachronism but with astonishing vitality. W h e n television was first introduced, educators feared that the new medium would destroy reading. Libraries, however, reported that book use increased with the advent of television. Today, more books are produced, bought and read by more people than ever before. But not everywhere. D u e to the economic inequality that still exists in the world today, not everybody has an equal right to books. A book
famine remains in whole regions of the world. I n 1972, International Book Year, Unesco's M e m ber States are attempting to solve this problem among many others so that liber (the book) can continue to be an instrument for the liberation of the h u m a n spirit for all. Arabic, French, Russian and Spanish versions of this film are also available.
