PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 384 - 12 Oct 2002 More DM demos for US Medicare A number of new disease management (DM) demonstration projects are to be launched by the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to further examine DM’s effectiveness as a costcontainment and quality maintenance tool for Medicare, Disease Management News reports. The demonstration projects include capitated payment arrangements with qualified organisations using case-management techniques to treat chronic diseases, and an integrated care management system that aims to cut costs and improve quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries with end-stage renal disease. A demonstration comprising a larger-scale populationbased project targeting specific chronic diseases is still on the drawing board. ‘We anticipate that better outpatient care and monitoring through the dynamic disease management model will reduce avoidable hospitalizations, avoid unnecessary services and improve outcomes’, says deputy administrator and chief operating officer for CMS Ruben King-Shaw.
