In April 1966 the GrozNII Institute held a technical conference on research in the manufacture and use of paraffins and the deparaffinization of petroleum products by solvents. The conference was attended by representatives from refineries, leading research, planning and teaching institutes and affiliated societies, Soyuznefte4ksport, MInneftekkimprom SSSR, and other organizations. The conference heard more than forty reports and papers. OrozNII, the major organization dealing with problems of paraffin manufacture, gave reports on future prospects and consumption of paraffins in the Soviet Union and the development of deparaffinization processes for petroleum products (N. F. Bogdanov, A. N. Leonidov). D . A . Gasner (Soyuznefte4ksport) read a paper on quality requirements for paraffin on the world market, and the prospects of Soviet exports of paraffin. Workers from refineries gave reports on the operation of equipment and the improvement of processes for deparaffinization and deoiling of petroleum products, the raising of output per man-shift and the improvement of plant layout for paraffin manufacture (E. M. Varshaver, A. Sh. Turov, Yu. D. Oilyadov, M. V. Samoilov, Yu. D. Chernyshev, and others). Great emphasis was laid on the development of new deparaffinization processes (N. F. Bogdanov, S. I. Stepuro, T. I. Praven'kaya), the use of new solvents (T. I. Praven'kaya, S. I. Stepuro, N. F. Bogdanov), nitroparaffins (L. M. Kozlov and others), chloroethers (A, K. Seleznev), molecular sieves (Ya. V. Mirskii), the intensification of deparaffinization of oils and deoiling of paraffins by means of ultrasound (S. Sh. Abramovich), the combination of thermal deoiling and deparaffinization by solvents (V. M. Evtushenko) etc. I.S. Kevorkova and R. Sh. Kuliev gave an interesting paper on the development of deparaffinization processes at the Baku refinery. Considerable interest was expressed in reports on the chemical composition and physical properties of liquid and solid paraffins. Interesting data were given on the crystallization of solid paraffins by the MINKh and GP institute (N. I. Chemozhukov) and OrozNII (A. N. Pereverzev), the study of the hydrocarbon composition of commercial liquid and solid paraffins by mass spectrometry (I. A. Mikhailov and A. A. Polyakova of VNIINP), and the composition and properties of paraffins from eastern petroleums processed by combined deparaffinization and deoiling (g. V. Voznesenskaya and O. V. Shakhsuvarova of VNIINP). Some of the reports dealt with the use of paraffins and the preparation of new types and different forms of wax~like products. A report was given by INKhP of the Azerbaidzhan Academy of Sciences (B. K. Zeinalov) on the use of low-melting paraffins in industry. Several institutes and refineries gave information on their work on the manufacture of solid hydrocarbons for the tire and rubber industry; these included the Volgograd branch of GrozNII (M. G. Mitrofanov), MINKh and GP (I. P. Lukashevich), BashNII (V. A. Sobolev, V. V. Vorob'eva), the Omsk refinery (A. P. Ryabova), etc. Much attention was paid to the subject of edible paraffin. A number of papers were given on its preparation by different methods of purification: hydrogenation, adsorption, the use of oleum, etc. The most important achievements in this field have been obtained by the UKrNII-Giproneft' Institute (N. Ya. Rudakova, B. K. Sheremeta), and major research has been carried out in OrozNII (L. P. Rozova) and the Kuibyshev branch of BashNII (K. K. Denisenko). M. I. Rozhkova (VNIISintezbelok)andK. S. Ltpovskaya (VNII NP) spoke on the use of liquid paraffins for biosynthesis and the selection of crude for this purpose. Several reports dealt with the use of liquid and solid paraffins for the manufacture of aliphatic alcohols and acids (V. M. Pedayas, G. I. Moskvina and others of VNIISINZh). A paper from VNII NP (S. Z. Levinson, I. A. Mikhailov and others) dealt with extensive purification of liquid and solid paraffins by the absorption method. Attention was also paid to questions relating to taring, packing, and the introduction of machines for tableting paraffin. Many people took part in the discussion. The conference adopted a resolution calling for intensification of manufacturing processes, expansion of research, and improvement of the range and quality of the paraffins produced, because they are now widely used in various branches of industry.
