PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 300 - 17 Feb 2001 Strong results with onsite DM programmes in the US Strong results have been achieved by US energy company Southern Co., Atlanta, indicating clear successes for their onsite disease management (DM) programmes, reports Disease Management News. Six-month results for the company’s pilot diabetes mellitus education programme, which started in September 1999, showed that substantial gains in clinical outcomes were obtained in the intervention group, compared with the control group. Furthermore, their ‘Switch to Health’ programme, also begun in 1999, has saved the company’s medical plan approximately $US325 000, and prevented ≥ 70 lost work days, due to early prostate cancer detection in 5 employees last year. In the same year, the detection of 4 employees with cardiac problems saved the plan about $US128 000, and prevented 120 lost work days, says the company’s Health Care Services Coordinator Gloria Hardegree.
