PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 317 - 16 Jun 2001 Valuable methodology for measuring DM programmes’ effectiveness The ‘Length of Time in Program’ (LOTIP) methodology is a valuable means of measuring and comparing the effectiveness of disease management (DM) programmes, according to a case study conducted in the US. Based on data from Accordant Health Services, Inc., US, independent epidemiologist Dr Thomas Wilson used LOTIP methodology to evaluate the value of services provided to patients with one of 5 complex diseases managed by the DM company. Compared with reference patients from numerous MCOs* who did not use Accordant’s DM programmes, it was found that the company’s population-based programmes had a positive effect on members’ health over time. Dr Wilson comments that ‘real world’ factors can affect DM programme results that are reported using calendar time-period approaches, such as per-member-permonth and return-on-investment cost analyses, thus reducing the significance of certain conclusions. LOTIP methodology, while taking into account external factors, focuses on documenting patient outcomes based on the length of time they are enrolled in the DM programme. * managed-care organisations Accordant Health Services Inc.
