Peter B. Czedik-Eysenberg Past President o f F E C S - W P F C In 1975, Prof.Dr. Peter Czedik-Eysenberg was the driving force to found the Working Party of Food Chemistry of the Federation of European Chemical Societies. Himself being an active food chemist with Unilever, he saw the necessecity to form an European network of scientists in this pertinent field of the natural sciences very clearly. His conviction, that an open exchange of knowledge will not only advance food chemical science, but will also help to improve the quality of food itself was his driving force, which resulted in an astonishing number of various activities, which today have their place in the academic life of food chemists and indeed many other scientists in food related fields acroos Europe and beyond. Under his guidance and chairmanship, several series of conferences were initiated: EuroFoodChem, which now is held biannually, started in 1980 in Vienna, and it is only a small tribute of Prof.Czediks achievements, that EuroFoodChem VIII is held again in Vienna (Sept. 18-20., 1995). This series of conferences, which regularly draws ca. 300-700 food chemists, is no doubt the 'flagship' of the Working Party; however, other conferences he initiated are no less important and have made their impact. Without going into too much detail and to name only a few, symposia like Bioavailability or EuroFoodTox demonstrate aptly his farsighted belief, that interdisciplinarity is essential for the understanding of food chemistry. EuroResidue, the symposia on residues of veterinary drugs in food of animal origin is another example. As a chairman of the annual business-meetings and the meetings of the scientific committees he proved a relentless pursuer of the goals he set. His charming and inimitable styls brought about many a decision which was, according to the preceding heated debates, thought impossible. Quite often, passing an evening at the 'Heurigen' in one of the charming restaurants near Vienna helped break apparent deadlocks. Sometimes, however, it was only Peters unique tactics of democratic dictatorship (democratorship) which made the most ardent fighters for other views yield...! During all these years, the Working Party was constantly growing. Today, delegates of 23 European countries represent more than 12'000 food chemists, and the annual business meetings are regulary attended by representatives from ca. 15 - 20 countries. In the course of 1994, Prof.Dr. Peter Czedic-Eysenberg went onto retirement, and on the 20.September 1994, he passed the chairmanship of 'his' Working Party to Dr. Reto Battaglia. We, the delegates of the FECS member countries represented in the Working Party on Food Chemistry would like to thank him very much
indeed for his immense work, his efforts and his contribution to the formation of a unique network of food chemists in Europe. We also wish him and his family all the best and good health for many years to come. I, as the new chairman, am particulary glad to be able to uphold the contact with him: ProfCzedik has recenlty been elected member of the FECS-Council - congratulations! For the members of FECS-WPFC Dr. R. Battaglia, Chairman
