tometry for real-time microbiological control”. New cytometric detectors (ChemScan) based on laser technology are able to directly detect (without pre-enrichment), e.g. viable microbes, which have previously been made fluorescent by appropriate staining techniques. Two validation procedures applied to test kits by AOAC International and AFNOR were compared by M. Bony, Rhône-Poulenc Diagnostics, Lyon, France, assessing the commercial kit LOCATE, which utilizes monoclonal antibodies for the detection of salmonella. The final topic, “New approach hygiene: The place of microbiological analysis in foodstuffs” was presented by U. Singer, Laboratoires Wolff, Clichy, France. In order to respect good hygiene rules during food production processes and to ensure the compliance of foods with essential microbiological safety requirements, a directive “Hygiene” (43/93) has been published within the European Community. Microbiological analyses constitute a working tool within the HACCP method, and contribute to the anticipation and prevention of health hazards. C. F. Bourgeois (Y) 7 J.-L. Gafner 7 T. MEETING REPORT Accred Qual Assur (1996) 1 : 229 Q Springer-Verlag 1996
P. De Bièvre
Report on a Round Table on “Global Assurance of Traceability” held at the Conference on Precision Electromagnetic Measurements ’96 (CPEM ’96) 17–20 June 1996, Braunschweig, Germany The round table had representative from – the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme APMP (B. Inglis, National Measurement Laboratory, Australia), – COOMET (R. Spurny, Waszawa), – the European Cooperation in Metrology EUROMET (K. Carneiro, Danmark), – The North American Cooperation in Metrology NORAMET (A. Robertson, Canada), – Northern Africa (M. El-Fiki, Egypt) and – Southern Africa (M. Wimmers).
It was presided by Dr. T. Quinn, Director BIPM. Each of the round table members briefly outlined the fairly large array of ongoing activities in their region aiming at the realization of border-crossing comparability of physical measurements. Dr. Quinn pointed out that demonstration of “equivalence” or “comparability” of measurement standards – especially of primary standards of measurement – was becoming an ever increasing need. Desirability of equivalence of “measurement certificates” was raised pointing the need for national measurement laboratories to guarantee sufficient trust in them – after verification in the area they are responsible for. The need for “internationalisation” of verified measurement equivalence and of monitoring the international equivalence of such standards is indeed high on the agendas!
