front/back position, seat height, seat base and backrest angle as well as the lumbar support can be electrically adjusted. Rear seat system
The seat landscape of the new Sharan makes it possible to select between a five, six and seven-seater version, 4. When configured as a six-seater, the two seats in the middle row are shifted inwards and have side armrests attached to the backrest. In addition, side airbags, integrated child seats and seatbelt fasten-
ing sensors are optionally available for the second row. Right from the start, the focus on developing the rear seat system of the new Sharan was directed towards occupant comfort, as well as variability and functionality. Particular attention was paid to achieving the most user-friendly handling possible. The following functions were defined as the most important development requirements: : “EasyEntry” function to the third seat row : one hand/one step operation : excellent seat comfort even in the second and third seat rows : seat folding function to create a flat loadbed : comfort backrest angle : front/back adjustment option : variable seat landscapes. An unlocking handle on the top edge of the backrest enables the customer to move the seat to the “EasyPackage” position, as well as to move the entire seat as far forwards as possible. This combination of EasyPackage and EasyEntry kinematics, 5, permits maximum use of the entry and alighting width. As a result, not only adults but also children can easily get into or step out of the third seat row. In contrast to the previous model, the seats no longer need to be removed in order to create a flat loadbed. Simply operating the backrest handle positioned
Front seats
The front seats have been taken from the Tiguan modular system. The Trendline, Comfortline and Highline equipment versions are differentiated by seats with a different design. The main differences concern the contours of the seat foams and the covering materials. Covers in fabric and partial leather are available. A manual two-way lumbar support is available from the Comfortline version upwards in order to allow for back comfort when sitting. Fully electric adjustment of the front seats is also available, in which case the

on the side folds the backrest down onto the seat base, whilst at the same time a Dive-Down kinematic function recesses it forwards and downwards into the avail able footwell space. This combined function permits a flat package dimension. When the third seat row is folded, this creates a flat loadbed with a generous load volume, 6, without the need to remove the seats. The seat back is covered with an easycare carpet. The backrests of the seat system can be adjusted through 20°. The gradual adjustment in increments of 2° contributes to occupant comfort, in particular on long journeys. Front/back adjustment is pos sible within a range of 160 mm. When the integrated child seat option is selected, the seat surface can be raised by means of a mechanism for children of three years and older, and the seat side cushions are folded up for optimum lateral hold. In addition, side cushions attached to the headrest help to secure smaller children. The third seat row that is available as an option consists of two free-standing July 2010

individual seats. The customer can also select between a basic position and two comfort positions, with an angle increment of 2°. Operation is by means of a loop on the inside of the seat. The unlocking handle at the top of the backrest makes it possible to fold both seats down completely, and independently of one another, with the entire folding procedure being performed in only two steps. First of all, the backrest is unlocked using the handle. A spring with a gas damper integrated in the seat cushion automatically folds the seat cushion over in a controlled way. After this, the customer only needs to push the backrest downwards. The “TiltFlat” kinematic function does not place it on the seat base cushion as usual, but behind it. This concept permits a high load volume to be achieved in the sevenseater as well. In a second step, the backrest flap is placed on the seat cushion as protection. Having the second seat row in the loading position as well results in a flat and closed loadbed. To return the backrest to the seat position, the backrest flap is first pulled back
using a loop with a colour that contrasts it against the loadbed. Following this, the backrest can be pulled up using the round handle in the backrest flap. The ease of reach means that even relatively small people can pull up the backrest. Finally, the seat cushion is returned forwards into the seat position by hand. The customer is assisted during the procedure of pulling up and folding over the backrest thanks to two gas springs integrated in the seat structure. These also support the backrest for the comfort setting. A special kinematic mechanism ensures that the backrest does not collide with the tonneau cover located directly behind the second seat row when the backrest is being folded down. The two seats in the third row are each equipped with two belt locks, in order to allow convenient loading and unloading without disruption from any seatbelts. Its special kinematic mechanism means that the seat structure complies with the latest crash requirements for all seats, even in the second and third seat rows. The headrests can be pulled out a

seats, but also allows control for each seat according to individual requirements, 7. The basic version is offered with manual control, and the interior is provided with cold and hot air by means of the front system. In the controlled “Climatronic”, the rear seats are also included in the air conditioning settings by means of a separately controllable rear system. This allows all seats to have air conditioning settings that are independent from one another. With this equipment, each seat has its own nozzles for hot and cold air. Climatronic offers three-zone setting variants for temperature and airflow rate control. Heating
long way, providing effective protection even for tall people. To guarantee optimum child safety, all seats are equipped with Isofix mounting points that make it easy to attach Isofix child seats. There are retainers for child seats with TopTether function available as standard on all seats of the second and third row.

Air conditioning
The newly developed, modular air conditioning system in the Sharan permits a wide range of mutually attuned variants for controlling the interior temperature. The development did not just produce air conditioning of equal quality for all
In the fully automatic variant, two heat ex changers in the front and rear areas are provided with water from the engine, in which case an additional electric pump in the heating circuit ensures that the necessary water flow rates are achieved. Additionally, the necessary heating power is provided not only by heat from the engine but also by an auxiliary fuel-powered heater. Outlets in the foot area provide individual warm airflows to the separate seats. The footwell of the third seat row is heated via an air duct from the rear system. The nozzles there are arranged so that part of the air also supplies the second seat row additionally. Furthermore, roof nozzles in the rear area help to keep the rear side windows
from fogging up. A separate outlet in the roof nozzles channels a curtain of air over the inside of the windows, which is aligned in such a way that passengers are not exposed to any draughts. Refrigerant circuit
The associated evaporators are located in the front and rear distribution housings. They are supplied by the refrigerant circuit with an externally controlled compressor. In conjunction with an uprated condenser, it has been possible to in crease the overall output of the system compared to the previous model. Control of the compressor according to requirements, and depending on the power usage, results in reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. As well as the nozzles in the dash panel for the front area, there are also nozzles integrated in the sides of the roof in the rear area, meaning that the occupants of the rear seats can be supplied with a variable flow of cold air. Interior climate control
Consistent use of numerical airflow simulations in the concept phase meant it has been possible to configure air ducts and air conditioning units for favourable airflow, to reduce the consumption of elec trical power and, at the same time, to increase the air conditioning comfort in the interior – with even airflow values at
low air speeds. The individual air ducts have been optimised with regard to their airflow resistance values to the air masses required. Given the minimum installation space and the smallest possible surface area of the air duct at the air conditioning blower, it is only necessary to have pressure increases that are within the optimum delivery characteristic of the air conditioning blower. In addition, the energy exchange at duct walls has been minimised, thereby allowing the necessary cooling or heating power to be reduced accordingly. Separate air ducts in the dash panel provide air to the nozzles in the dash panel, which can be individually directed and closed. Four nozzles are arranged at the sides in the rear, and are supplied by the rear system. The air conditioner in the rear channels its air to the nozzles in the roof by means of a central roof duct. Here too, the nozzles can be individually aligned and closed. Automatic air conditioning
The objective of automatic air conditioning is to achieve rapid and accurate control of the preselected temperature, without impairing comfort due to acoustic or thermal influences. A variety of environmental sensors allows the automatic mode to take over all necessary interventions such as air distribution, blower speed and individual air outlet temperatures, so that a pleasant cli-
mate can be guaranteed for all occupants of the vehicle even given changing weather and driving conditions. The customer can select between the gentle control of “auto low” mode and the “auto high” mode which is designed to achieve the set temperature rapidly. As an expansion to the Climatronic available previously with individual temperature controls for the driver and front seat passenger (two-zone temperature control), all variants of the Climatronic available in the Sharan permit independent control of a third climate zone which is located in the rear area (second and third seat row) of the vehicle. This third climate zone is operated by pressing the Rear button on the Climatronic control, or by means of the rear control panel that is fitted in the centre console as an option, ➑. The nominal temperature, air distribution and blower output for the rear seat area can be adjusted manually on request by means of an Auto mode that is independent of the rest of the vehicle. The residual heat function that can be activated using the Climatronic control (REST) button enables the interior to continue to be heated when the engine is stopped, without using an auxiliary heater. This is done by continuing to pump the engine coolant heated during driving through the heating heat ex changer. As a result, the remaining heat is used to control the temperature of the forward part of the passenger compartment.

eXtended disPlay
The current temperature, air distribution and blower setting of all three climate zones are shown not only on the Climatronic control but also on the display of most radio and navigation systems. Pressing the REAR button causes the display to change the climate zone between the front and rear parts of the vehicle. When the settings are changed, a pop-up window appears on the display irrespective of the selected display mode (radio or navigation view), providing a quick overview of the currently selected air conditioning settings, ➒. Fogging detection
DOI: 10.1365/s40111-010-0222-y
By measuring the interior humidity in the vehicle, it is possible to dispense with the requirements of the air conditioning compressor throughout a broad range of exterior temperatures – and therefore on many journeys. The benefit of an air conditioning system is not only temperature control of the interior but also drying of the interior air. To date, the air conditioning compressor was forced to operate even at relatively low exterior temperatures – almost as a preventative measure – in order to dehumidify the windows. Now, the actual dew point can be compared with the window temperature for fogging control in order to detect a possible tendency towards fogging, mean-
46
ing that the compressor is exclusively switched on when required, thereby delivering a significant CO2 saving under many possible driving conditions. A combined rain/light/moisture sensor, ❿, fitted in the area of the mirror base measures the window temperature and the humidity prevailing there. Both these values determine the dew point on the inside of the window. The Climatronic now detects the risk of window fogging in the heating range, and consequently dispenses with use of the compressor. Equally, the compressor can be dispensed with in cooling applications – within an extended temperature range with low humidity – providing the required air outlet tem-
perature can still be achieved without it. Both measures contribute significantly to reducing CO2 emissions when the vehicle is in use with the customer. Furthermore, this sensor enables Climatronic to detect the onset of fogging on a window even in the heating-only range below 0 °C. In this case, more air is directed towards the window by altering the air distribution in the interior. The blower voltage and also the air outlet temperature can be increased additionally. These measures are only used when the situation calls for them, because although they do contribute to safety, heating of the head area can, in extreme cases, reduce interior comfort. At other times, the vehicle can be heated up more rapidly by increased airflow rates in the footwell, or else the blower voltage can be reduced in order to cut noise levels. Furthermore, an air quality sensor in the air duct ensures that the recirculating air flap is closed if nitrous oxides and carbon monoxide are detected, thereby preventing exhaust fumes from vehicles in front from entering the cabin, for example. luggage comPartment
The luggage compartment, ⓫, of the new Touareg will appeal with functions, operating comfort and large capacity. The entire luggage compartment is lined with dilours carpet, thereby providing a highquality and durable environment even when subjected to significant loadings. Overall, the luggage compartment offers the greatest possible variability combined with the best possible practicality.
❿ Combined rain/light/humidity sensor fitted in the mirror base
⓫ Luggage compartment
The storage options for the tonneau cover are new features above all when the vehicle is used as a six or seven seater (behind the third seat row) as well as under the front loadbed flap (in the fiveseater configuration). One challenge concerned developing the optional luggage compartment system with rails arranged at the sides. These now permit applications in combination with the third seat row. The associated V-shaped net allows
light luggage to be accommodated safely. Furthermore, the telescopic rods can also be used for securing heavy luggage behind the second seat row. An innovative operating logic allows the system to be moved using the handles of the telescopic rods. Locking is performed by turning up to the stop in any direction. The system includes additional flexibly adaptable attachment elements for various possible uses.
Occupant safety can be increased further by means of an optional net partition not only behind the second but also behind the first seat row. The concept is rounded off by numerous storage compartments, bag hooks as well as a storage compartment in the luggage compartment trim on the left, which can also house the CD changer. Cushioned armrests and two cup holders in combination with the third seat row increase the comfort for journeys.
