IAG Newsletter Pascal Willis IAG Central Bureau, 2, Avenue Pasteur, BP 68, F-94160 Saint-Mand6, France
This part of the Bulletin G6od6sique is under the editorial responsibility of the lAG Central Bureau chaired by the IAG General Secretary. It will include, in each issue, several topics : Informations. Reports of IAG symposia. Reports by National Correspondents. Reports from IAG Special Study Group. Symposia announcements. Book reviews. Fast bibliography. It is the intent of the IAG to extend the services provided by its Central Bureau. An up-to-date information medium is one of the key elements. The IAG Newsletter, included as appendix of the Bulletin G6od6sique, should play this role, and therefore considered as an open forum. Contributors are welcomed to send any information or document which may be of interest for this purpose. This should complement the informations already sent by the lAG officials or the IAG symposia organizers (reports and anouncements). Books to be reviewed are under the responsibility of: Prof. G0nter W. HEIN Institute of Geodesy and Navigation (IfEN) University FAF Munich D-85577 Neubiberg Gennany

Book Reviews Howel, David G.: Principles of Terrane Analysis. New applications for global tectonics. Second edition. XII, 245 p., Chapman & Hall., London etc., 1995, £ ?, ISBN 0-412-54640-X An outline of continental plate tectonics written in a refreshing style mainly for "beginers", this book gives a good impression of how "dynamic"-or better : how mobile continents really are. The message is that continental plate tectonics is essentially terrane tectonics. In the course of mantle revolutions and plate movements continents are sprit into fragments and grow in a never ending series of accretion, amalgamation and orogeny. In the Introduction (Chpt. 1) definitions are given and the question of continental growth through earth history is discussed. Chpt. 2 describes today's plate tectonics. Chpt. 3 presents the state of knowledge about continental growth and its mechanisms. Suspect terranes, Chap. 4, attempts definition of terranes and their boundaries. In Chpt. 5 ("Kinematics : measuring terrane displacements") briefly considers the methods by which also plate movements are determined (including geodetic methods). Chpt. 6 has the heading "Mountain building and the shaping of continents ; it examines orogeny in a number of topical regions : the western Pacific margins, Himalaya-Tibet, the Mediterranean, and the North and South American west. Chpt. 7 discusses practical aspects of terrane geology to field work and strategies for energy and mineral exploration. A glossary, a list of references and an index conclude the book.
"Principles of Terrane Analysis" is written for geologists, motivated by the realization that the continents are made of terranes and that terranes are ubiquitous and make continental geolgy most complex. The concept of terranes presents itself as a method and a message bringing some order into the chaos. What I have taken from reading the book is that mobility is even greater than I had previously felt it to be. Uncountable small and large earthquakes during geological time contribute to continental deformation. The concept of rigid plates has to be extended to one in which parts of the plates deform through geological time. The feeling for time is most important to the researcher. This is important for geodesists to keep in mind. Usually, I believe, geodesists will shy away from a largely "geological" treatise. But the deeper their geological insight (in the broadest sense), the more clearly directed and efficient their design of geodetic campaings will become and the better the general earth science coopemtiolt The book is well written. It takes a "healthy philosophical" attitude towards "reality". It attemps quantification of qualitative concepts. It aims at helping the reader to come to grips with a complex subject, e.g by ending each chapter with a summary and conclusions. I recommend this book to any earth scientist who wants to understand the earth by studyind it through geological or geophysical field work and by measuring it as accurately as possible. I recommend it also to all libraries serving such people. W. Jacoby
