BRIEFS Reduced Price on DEC A-D Converter Models Digital Equipment Corp. has reduced prices up to 40% on two high-speed analog-to-digital converters. The $750 Model A-SOl integrated circuit converter (accurate to 0.1%; speed of 100,000 samples per second) has been reduced to $450. The A-SOO hall been reduced from $700 to $400. This is the same as the A-SOl without the built-in precision reference supply. Reason for the price reduction is more fully automated production resulting from increased sales volume. Small Computer Time-Sharing System Digital Equipment Corp. has announced a complete local time-sharing system at a cost of approximately $45,000 for eight users on-line. The S+ terminal system includes a PDP_So series computer and peripheral equipment. The system may be expanded or serve as a satellite for laboratories or departments turning to larger systems in the future. New Small Computer Product Line Data General Corp. of Hudson, Mass. is developing a new small computer product line. Among the founders of the firm are the former heads of small computer design, small computer applications programming, and memory and circuit development at Digital Equipment Corp (DEC). Types of Integrated Circuits (IC) Individual manufacturers have their own methods of putting together the components and interconnections making up a single IC. However, there are several common types of les that will be around for a while regardless of change in production techniques. Thin-Film ICs permit exceptionally high frequency response and are extremely small in size. They employ a technique through which layers of atoms of a semiconductor material are evaporated onto a ceramic or sapphire substrate through a series of masks. Thick-Film ICs are postage stamp in size and shape, and have external protective epoxy dip. These employ a method similar to printed circuit couplates. ultrasonically into place. Resistors are either offset nrinted or silkscreened into the appropriate location. Monolithic ICs are rugged and relatively inexpensive. Their individual components are etched out on a solid silicon chip. Hybrid ICs are generally expensive and usually low-frequency devices. They lend themselves to high power outputs and circuitry where interconnections can be altered to suit a particular requirement. Hybrid ICs consist of a number of transistors, capacitors (and possibly power resistors), and interconnected monolithic ICs. Laser Diodes The GaAs (gallium arsenide) injection laser is a lightemitting semiconductor diode for illumination and short-range communication; at room temperature it emits infrared radiation. It is not comparable to conventional ruby or gas lasers because of wider divergence angle, different emission modes, and the presence of incoherent emitted light.
