Park, Chong-wook (New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126). Type specimens of Polygonum (Polygonaceae) in the Meisner herbarium at the New York Botanical Garden. Brittonia 39: 96-105. 1987.--Carl Friedrich Meisner (1800-1874) described 186 new taxa in Polygonum in his series of publications. This paper provides the list of type specimens of Polygonum found in the Meisner herbarium at the New York Botanical Garden. One hundred fifty-eight types and possible types representing 108 Polygonum taxa described by Meisner have been located.
Carl FriedrJch Meisner (1800-1874) was a Swiss botanist who served as professor of botany and director of the botanical garden at Basel for over forty years. Though his interests in systematic botany embraced all vascular plant families, he had a lifelong interest in Polygonaceae and produced a series of important publications on this family (Appendix). In particular, his first botanical work, Monographiae Generis Polygoni Prodromus (Appendix, no. 1), and the Polygonaceae in de Candolle's Prodromus (Appendix, no. 8) can be regarded as the most important early contributions to the understanding of the genus Polygonum. Details of Meisner's life, career, achievements, and herbarium were provided by de Candolle (1874) and Barneby (1963). Before Meisner died in 1874, his entire personal herbarium was purchased by John J. Crooke, a member of Torrey Botanical Club, and donated to the Torrey herbarium at Columbia University (Anonymous, 1876; Gray, 1874; Trimen, 1873). The actual year of purchase by Crooke is unclear, but based on Trimen's article (1873) it seems to have been made in 1873 or shortly before. Later, Meisner's herbarium was transferred on permanent loan to the New York Botanical Garden, and was fully incorporated into the Garden's herbarium. Technically, however, it is still part of the Torrey collection and the property of Columbia University (Barneby, 1963). Meisner's herbarium is apparently a large one, but unfortunately there is no record of its precise size. His herbarium represents all groups of higher plants and some cryptogams, but it is particularly rich in Polygonum because of his special interest in this group. Meisner's Polygonum collection is worldwide in scope, and spans a period from the 1820's to the 1860's. Except for a few specimens collected by Meisner himself in Switzerland (mostly near Geneva and Basel), his Polygonum collection was mainly built up through correspondence with such botanists and collectors of the era as de Candolle, Wallich, Martins, Miquel, Schlagintweit, Drrge, Boissier, de Vries, and Shuttleworth. Specimens from India, Japan, and southeast Asia are especially numerous, but many other parts of the world, including North America, South America, the West Indies, Europe, Australia, and Africa, are also represented. As Barneby (1963) pointed out, Meisner always cited the specimens he examined for his revisionary studies. Therefore, most of his Polygonum specimens were very carefully annotated by him in connection with his publications. Specimens are usually mounted two to four per sheet, and many of them bear original packets for seeds and fragments. Most of the specimens bear the labels in Meisner's handwriting, but some of them have labels of original collectors accompanied by Meisner's annotations. The information on the label includes name of taxon,

Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries Schedules Organizational Meeting The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries is planning a special business meeting during the International Botanical Congress in Berlin in July 1987. A major objective of the meeting is to organize a European chapter. CBHL invites all interested in botanical documentation to attend. It is anticipated that the meeting will follow the scheduled Symposium on Electronic Data Processing in Botany, and be followed by a dinner. The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries was established in 1970 to encourage communication among individuals and institutions concemed with the botanical and horticultural literature. The present 250 members represent the United States and ten other countries around the world. For more information contact the president, Geraldine C. Kaye, Farlow Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A.
